Kansas City Family Photographer ~ 8th Grade Locker Portraits

I had the incredible honor of photographing the entire 8th grade class at my sons’ school.  This was definitely a “stretch my wings” kind of project ~ but I am so happy I dove in and took it on!  I love working with babies and young children, but just haven’t had as many opportunities to work with the middle school age.  To be honest, I was a nervous wreck the first day I showed up at school.  It is one thing to photograph a young teenager with his or her family, but with so many buddies standing around watching ~ I just wasn’t sure what was going to happen!  I was pretty sure my tricks about “watch the lens and see if my eyes change color” weren’t going to work too well with this crowd ;)

I have to say, I was so very impressed with these kids!!  They were fun and friendly, kind and grateful.  What you say?  Grateful?  Yes!  I had several of the students come up to me afterwards in the hall or on the school grounds and tell me how much they enjoyed having their photos taken, thanking me for doing it, telling me they were excited to tell their parents to buy their “Locker Portrait” at the school auction.  The whole experience really became such a blessing.  In the end, I am the one who is grateful for the opportunity to have worked with these amazing kids.  You see, I have two little boys, ages 4 and 6, who attend this school.  And the idea that my boys are going to a school that helps raise up kids like these, well, it certainly makes my Mama Heart happy….

And I also owe a huge thank you to the Hoban Family and Prairiebrooke Arts for the custom matting of all of the prints. Prairiebrooke was so generous to donate their time and materials to take these photos and the display up another level.  I hope many of the parents take advantage of their beautiful custom framing offer that was included with the purchase of the print ~ the custom framed sample was just gorgeous!  I played the role of guest and parent at the auction, not photographer, so I didn’t bring my big girl camera.  But I did grab a couple iphone shots of the display so I could share them all with you :)

Kansas City Family Photographer ~ Stengel Boys by the Fire

Oh these boys!  They are growing so fast, but they are oh so much fun!!  We absolutely love the holidays around here ~ I know the blog and Facebook page were a bit quiet, but that was mainly because we were just having far too much time to stop and get to the computer!  But don’t worry, there was time for plenty of pictures ;)

Of course I had to get my boys in on the Fireside Mini sessions for our Holiday card!!  I still can’t believe how perfect our backyard fireplace is as a backdrop for holiday sessions – can’t wait to do many more of these next season!

Now, as any photographer Mama knows, shooting your own kids is often the most challenging assignment you can take on.  But my boys have gotten used to it as they have a bit grown older ~ and I *may* have gathered a few new tricks lately ~ so together we are doing pretty well ;)  I have learned to keep it short and sweet and it works out for all three of us ~ and I get these at the end of it…

Do you have any special tricks when taking photos of your own children?  Do you find it easier or harder to photograph your own vs. others?  I would love to hear about some of your experiences!!

Kansas City Family Photographer ~ Hot Chocolate and PJs by the Fire

So happy to share this fun little session I shot in December.  These kiddos were absolutely adorable!!  If they set the precedent for my new client base in Kansas City ~ well, let’s just say I feel very blessed!  They were so sweet and happy ~ just a pleasure to photograph ~ and that is saying something when you have four littles ages 4 to 9!

These fireside minis sessions were so much fun to do – I absolutely cannot wait to offer then again next Christmas.  The outdoor patio and fireplace was one of our favorite spots when we found our new home this summer ~ and it turned out to be a dream holiday backdrop as well ~ who knew?!? We may aim to do them a bit earlier next season and get ahead of the cold weather ~ but hot chocolate and blankets took care of the chill in the air and this crew took on the cold like champs.

And I have to admit, Mom’s favorites were the holiday themed pj photos, but I *may* have played a little bit with my black and white artsy side.  So when I came up with one of my favorite black and white photos in the past year, I knew I had to share that one too ;)  Things may look quiet around here, but the advantage is that I have had some time to really dig in and play a bit ~ and some exciting new things are coming in 2014 as a result. So now you get to see the fun holiday theme photos and the more serious black and white all in one post ~ I would absolutely love to hear what you like best :)
